Families come in all shapes and sizes and Aurora Reproductive Care offers a safe and welcoming environment for all couples wanting to build a family. We believe that gay and lesbian couples should be given equal opportunity in reproductive choice, and offer support to help couples build families. Our team is committed to helping all families achieve their dreams by providing the highest quality, personalized, and compassionate care.
At first glance it may seem that gay and lesbian couples have limited options for reproduction, however, there are a wide variety of technologies that exist to create a family. Basic fertility testing is usually recommended prior to treatment.
Some options include the following:
At Aurora Reproductive Care, we accept donor sperm from regulated sperm banks which screen sperm according to Health Canada Regulations. Screening includes a family history, complete medical, social and sometimes psychological history, blood group information, genetic screening and screening for transmissible diseases.
Information on the anonymous sperm donor, such as physical appearance, education and interests can also be provided. Unless there are previously identified fertility issues, pregnancy is attempted with intrauterine insemination (IUI). IUI is an office procedure in which motile sperm is placed directly into a woman’s cervix or uterus to increase the chance of pregnancy. Usually the addition of medications to stimulate egg production is not required in healthy women with no identified fertility issues.
Sometimes individuals wish to use a donor with whom they have a personal connection. Designated donors go through the same screening process as anonymous donors. More information on designated sperm donor in Canada is available on the ReproMed – The Toronto Institue fo Reproductive Medicine website.
